The creases were finished before you were
Palmar flexion creases form early, between about the eleventh and thirteenth week in the womb, where the developing hand folds against itself. They are set long before anything happens to you and never lengthen. Medicine reads them narrowly: a single transverse crease straight across the palm, sometimes called a simian crease, appears in about one hand in thirty and more often in people with Down syndrome. The finer ridge patterns are a separate science; Harold Cummins coined the word dermatoglyphics in 1926, and fingerprints have done courtroom work since.
Who decided which line was the heart
The four-line vocabulary here, heart and head and life and fate, is more European and more recent than people assume. Indian hand-reading, part of the older tradition of Samudrika Shastra, mapped the palm on different principles, as did Chinese practice, which leans on the mounts and on colour. In 1843 a French officer, Casimir Stanislas d'Arpentigny, published a system classifying hands by shape; Adolphe Desbarrolles added the lines soon after. Katharine St Hill founded the Chirological Society of Great Britain in 1889, and an Irishman trading as Cheiro made the practice a drawing-room fixture, reading the hands of Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde.
What each line is said to carry
In the standard reading the heart line runs beneath the fingers and describes how you attach: curving towards the index finger for the openly affectionate, flat and straight for the guarded. Below it the head line reports the shape of your thinking: short and level for the practical, long and sloping for the imaginative. The life line arcs around the base of the thumb and indicates vitality, never lifespan, whatever the films imply; one small post-mortem study reported a link between its length and age at death, and later work has not supported it. The fate line rises vertically and is missing from plenty of eventful hands, while a star, a small crossing of lines on one of the mounts, is read as a burst of luck.
Why a hand-reading lands so well
Part of the effect is the setting. Somebody holds your hand, looks closely and talks slowly about you for several minutes, an unusual quantity of undivided attention. Part is technique: open questions, safe base rates such as the line about protecting yourself more than people realise, and a reader who watches your face and adjusts. None of that requires dishonesty; plenty of readers believe every word. It does mean the accuracy you feel afterwards belongs to the conversation more than the creases, a fair trade as long as you know it going in.
