Twenty-nine and a half days
The moon returns to the same phase every 29.53 days, the synodic month, which is longer than the 27.3 days it takes to complete an orbit because Earth has moved along its own path in the meantime. Tidal locking keeps one hemisphere permanently turned toward us, although a slow wobble called libration lets patient observers see roughly 59 per cent of the surface over time.
Phases are not shadows cast by our planet. They are simply how much of the sunlit half happens to be visible from where we stand. Eclipses are the rarer case in which a shadow genuinely is involved, and their scarcity is why they were recorded so obsessively.
The phase names repay a second look. A first quarter moon looks half lit because the label counts a quarter of the cycle rather than a quarter of the disc, and gibbous comes from the Latin gibbus, a hump, describing that swollen shape between half and full.
Calendars, festivals and lunatics
Most of the world's older calendars are lunar or lunisolar. The Islamic year runs on twelve lunar months, which is why Ramadan drifts steadily through the seasons. Hebrew and Chinese calendars insert leap months to keep moon and sun in step. The date of Easter is still worked out from a paschal full moon, and the Mid-Autumn Festival is timed to a harvest one.
English law carried the same folk belief in the word lunatic, from luna, well into the twentieth century. Testing has been less generous. A 1985 review by James Rotton and Ivan Kelly pooled dozens of studies of hospital admissions, crimes and crisis calls and found no lunar effect worth reporting.
Where phase personalities came from
Assigning temperament to the moon's phase at birth is largely the work of Dane Rudhyar, whose 1967 book The Lunation Cycle split the month into eight types and handed modern astrology its vocabulary of new-moon beginners and balsamic old souls. It is an elegant scheme with no mechanism underneath it.
Read it as a way of asking whether you are currently starting something, riding it at full tilt, or letting it wind down. That is a fair question to put to yourself whatever the sky happens to be doing tonight.
