One hundred and seventy-six tiny pictures

Emoji began as a constraint rather than a flourish. In 1999, working on NTT DoCoMo's i-mode mobile internet service in Japan, Shigetaka Kurita drew a starter set of 176 symbols on a grid twelve pixels square, meant to pack weather, mood and travel information into almost no bandwidth at all. The originals look crude now, a heart, a plain smiling face, a bowl of noodles. The Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired the set in 2016.

They stopped being a Japanese curiosity when the Unicode Standard absorbed them in 2010, which meant a symbol typed on one manufacturer's handset would arrive as roughly the same symbol on somebody else's. Anyone can still propose an addition. You submit a case to the Unicode Consortium arguing for expected frequency of use and for distinctiveness, a subcommittee argues over it, and if the proposal survives, the character ships on phones a couple of years later.

They behave like gesture, not vocabulary

Linguists who study this mostly agree that emoji are not a language and are not attempting to become one. Hardly anybody writes in pure emoji. What they do instead is the work that a face, a pair of hands and a tone of voice do in a spoken conversation: they mark whether a sentence is a joke, a complaint, a flirtation or an apology. The word fine on its own and the word fine followed by a grin are doing opposite jobs.

Because they carry tone rather than meaning, they drift quickly, and the drift splits along age lines. The face with tears of joy was named Oxford Dictionaries' word of the year in 2015 and within a few years had acquired a faint air of being something your dad sends. The skull moved in to replace it, borrowed from the slang phrase for laughing until you cannot breathe. Sparkles read as gentle sarcasm in one group chat and pure delight in the next.

So does your favourite mean anything

Not a great deal, which is fine. Keyboard data consistently shows that the most used symbols worldwide are the plain positive ones, so most people's top slot is less distinctive than they would like. Habit, phone defaults and whoever you message most all quietly shape the ranking.

This is a party game with five stock characters in it. Read your result as a small piece of self flattery, not a diagnosis, and enjoy the argument it starts.
