The stage name is older than the guitar solo
Renaming yourself for the stage is a music hall and vaudeville habit that rock simply inherited, and the reasons are usually practical rather than mystical. David Robert Jones became David Bowie in 1965 because there was already a Davy Jones in the Monkees and two of them would have caused confusion; he took the new surname from the knife. Reginald Dwight assembled Elton John from the first names of two colleagues in his old band, the saxophonist Elton Dean and the singer Long John Baldry.
Others were handed a name by accident. Farrokh Bulsara, born in Zanzibar to a Parsi family, chose Freddie Mercury and built a persona to match. Gordon Sumner picked up Sting from a black and yellow striped jumper he wore in a jazz band, and it outlived every other fact about him. The name comes first surprisingly often, and the character grows into it.
Some sounds simply travel further
There is real research behind the intuition that certain names sound louder. In 1929 the psychologist Wolfgang Köhler showed people two shapes, one spiky and one rounded, and two nonsense words, and found overwhelming agreement about which word belonged to which shape. The experiment was revived and renamed the bouba/kiki effect in 2001, and it has since replicated across many languages and writing systems. Sharp consonants and high front vowels read as angular and fast; rounded vowels read as soft and slow.
Stage names exploit this constantly. Hard stops at the front of a word, short vowels and single syllables carry across a room and fit on a poster, which is why so many band names are blunt monosyllables. It is also why a mononym works: one word, no surname to soften it, nothing to abbreviate.
The persona is part of the instrument
The name is rarely the whole trick. Bowie built and then publicly retired Ziggy Stardust, a character with a wardrobe, a backstory and an expiry date. The Ramones adopted a single shared surname, borrowed from an alias Paul McCartney had used in his earliest touring days, and presented themselves as brothers who were not related at all. A stage name gives a performer a slightly different set of permissions, and plenty of them have said as much.
