Everything after Action Comics number one

Costumed heroes existed before June 1938, in pulp magazines and newspaper strips, but the character Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster sold to Detective Comics for a famously small sum changed the shape of the industry. Superman arrived with the whole template attached: the double identity, the disguise that is really the ordinary self, and a name built by welding an adjective to a noun.

Imitators followed within months, and the naming pattern hardened fast because it had to. In a crowded newsstand a hero needed a name that told a browsing child what the character did before they opened the cover. Nothing about that pressure has changed much.

The grammar of hero names

Look at enough of them and a small number of formulas emerge. There is the material or force plus an agent noun, which gives Iron Man, Silver Surfer and Human Torch. There is the borrowed rank or title, established by Captain America in 1941 and repeated endlessly with captains, doctors and professors, which lends instant unearned authority. There is the definite article treatment, where the plain noun becomes a threat purely by taking a the in front of it.

Alter egos follow their own rule. Stan Lee said openly that he gave characters alliterative names, Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, Reed Richards, Matt Murdock, Stephen Strange, because he was working at speed and could never otherwise remember which name he had assigned to whom. A memory aid became a house style and then a genre convention that readers now expect.

Names are property, and people fight over them

The commercial side is less romantic. Detective Comics sued Fawcett Publications for years over Captain Marvel, whose sales had at one point overtaken Superman's, and the fallout is why that hero is published today under the name Shazam while an entirely different Captain Marvel appears at Marvel. Even the generic term was claimed: the phrase super hero was held as a joint trademark by the two largest publishers for decades, an unusual arrangement finally cancelled in 2024 after a challenge from a small independent went undefended.

Your alias here is assigned by a bit of harmless wordplay on whatever you type, which is a considerably cheaper route to a hero name than the one the lawyers took. Take it in the spirit intended and enjoy the entrance.

How this one works: the name you type is turned into a number, and that number picks one of the outcomes below. It is a party trick rather than a reading — the fun is in which one you land on, not in it being true.
