Why colour works so well as emotional shorthand

Describing a feeling as a colour is a habit so common it barely registers as metaphor. Brent Berlin and Paul Kay's survey of colour vocabulary across languages found a striking regularity: languages acquire their basic colour terms in a roughly consistent order, and after black and white, red arrives first. Whatever else is going on, red is the colour humans reach for early and then load with meaning.

The famous red-attraction studies, and their wobble

In 2008 Andrew Elliot and Daniela Niesta reported that men rated the same woman as more attractive when her photograph appeared against a red background rather than a white one. The result travelled fast, into headlines and dating advice. Replication has not been kind to it. Larger and better-powered attempts, including work across multiple laboratories, have returned effects close to zero.

This is worth knowing not because it is gloomy but because it is a clean example of the process working as intended. An appealing finding was published, other people tested it properly, and it did not hold. Anyone telling you that one particular colour reliably makes people want you is quoting the headline rather than the follow-up.

What does hold up: your mood colours what you see

Norbert Schwarz and Gerald Clore ran a study in 1983 that has aged well. They telephoned people at random and asked how satisfied they were with life. Those rung on sunny days reported being happier than those rung on rainy ones, unless the caller first mentioned the weather, at which point the difference disappeared. People were quietly reading their momentary mood as information about their entire existence, right up until they were handed a reason not to.

Your read on your love life on any given evening is subject to the same effect. Ask on a bad Tuesday and the answer comes back grey. That is not a fault to correct, only something worth knowing before you make decisions on a bad Tuesday.

Reading your result as a weather report

No colour can be measured off a person, and no quiz can survey your romantic prospects. What this one produces is a mood-tinted snapshot of how you feel about love this week, dressed up as something prettier than a mood-tinted snapshot.

Which is a perfectly reasonable thing to have. Take the result, check it against how you would have described things a month ago, and treat any gap between the two as the genuinely interesting finding.
