The First Letter of Your Soulmate's Name

Somewhere out there, one person is going to wreck you in the best possible way — and their name starts with a single fated letter. Your own name, it turns out, holds the clue.

Type it in below and we'll decode the initial the universe scribbled next to your heart. Is this rigorously scientific? Absolutely not. Is it a deliciously fun way to start scanning every cutie's name tag? You already know the answer. Let's find your letter.

The genuinely odd research on name letters

There is real science underneath the silliness here, although it points somewhere unexpected. In 1985 the Belgian psychologist Jozef Nuttin reported that people rate the letters that appear in their own name more favourably than other letters, and do so with no awareness that they are doing it. The result has held up across many languages and alphabets. Your own initials genuinely look nicer to you than they look to anybody else.

In 2002 Brett Pelham and colleagues stretched this into a bolder claim they called implicit egotism: that people drift towards partners, cities and careers whose names echo their own, so a Dennis is a fraction more likely to become a dentist and a Louis to wind up in St Louis. It is a charming idea, and it is contested. Uri Simonsohn reanalysed the data in 2011 and argued that the marriage and city results were largely artefacts of ethnicity, birth cohort and the way the records had been assembled. The modest fondness for your own letters survives that scrutiny. The claim that it steers your life does not.

What an initial can honestly be used for

Nobody, then, can hand you a letter. Even if some faint statistical lean towards familiar-sounding names existed, it would be a whisper spread thinly across millions of people rather than an instruction about whoever talks to you at the next party. And the moment you begin scanning a room for an M, you have cast a stranger in a part they never auditioned for.

The interesting bit happens inside your own head. When the letter appears, somebody's face usually arrives with it, or a small drop of disappointment does. That reaction is free information about you. Beliefs about who is meant for us also have a way of feeding themselves: expect warmth from someone and you tend to behave more warmly, which tends to come back to you. That loop is strong enough that it seems a waste to let a random letter generator pull the trigger on it.

How this one works: the name you type is turned into a number, and that number picks one of the outcomes below. It is a party trick rather than a reading — the fun is in which one you land on, not in it being true.
