How Fast Is Your Brain Compared to Everyone?

Speed is its own kind of intelligence. Some brains grind slowly toward the right answer; others snap to it before the question fully lands, and both can be brilliant.

This round is built for velocity — seven quick-fire questions where your first instinct usually wins. Rack up a point for every correct answer and watch your mental horsepower add up. Don't stall, don't second-guess, just react. By the end you'll know exactly where your processing speed ranks against everybody else.

1/7
No calculator, go fast: what do you get when you multiply seven by eight?
2/7
Snap to it right now: what number is exactly half of the value ninety?
3/7
Quick as you can: how many seconds are there in one single full minute?
4/7
Fire off an answer: what do you get when you add twelve and fifteen?
5/7
Move fast now: what number remains when you subtract thirty-seven from one hundred?
6/7
Without stalling: how many zeros appear at the end of the number one thousand?
7/7
Blink-speed math: what number do you get when you square the digit nine?

How laboratories actually time a mind

Reaction time has been measured since the nineteenth century. The Dutch physiologist Franciscus Donders proposed a subtractive method in 1868: time a simple response, then time a response that requires choosing between alternatives, and treat the gap as the duration of the mental step sitting between them. Simple reaction to a light or a tone runs around 200 to 250 milliseconds in a healthy adult; adding options pushes it upward, and Hick's law describes that rise as roughly logarithmic in the number of choices.

A serious measurement uses dozens or hundreds of trials, discards the first few while the participant settles, trims outliers, and reports variability alongside the average. That variability matters more than people expect, shifting with age, fatigue and attention more sensitively than the mean does.

Why a web page makes a poor stopwatch

Between a screen and a keystroke sit display refresh intervals, browser event loops, input polling and whatever else the machine happens to be doing. Together they add tens of milliseconds of noise that differs from device to device. Research-grade timing uses dedicated hardware or software validated against it, and honest papers report the calibration.

This round is not timing you at all. It scores whether your answers are correct, which is a different measurement entirely, and the seven items lean on mental arithmetic you either practised at school or did not.

Speed and accuracy trade against each other

Every task of this shape sits on a speed-accuracy trade-off: answer sooner and you err more, take longer and you err less. A raw speed figure therefore means little on its own, because speed can always be bought with mistakes. Models such as the drift-diffusion account exist to pull apart how much evidence a person gathers from how cautious they choose to be, which is why cognitive scientists rarely quote a single number for how fast someone's brain runs.

So enjoy the quick-fire round as mental sprinting. A high score says you are comfortable doing sums under mild pressure. It does not estimate processing speed, and there is no real ranking against everyone else sitting behind it.
