Your Real Brain Age Is Hidden in Your Name

Forget the number on your birthday cake — your real brain age is a whole different story. The way you think, the way you solve, the way your curiosity fires: all of it hides a mental age that rarely matches the calendar.

Type in your name below and let the letters do the talking. This is pure fun, not science, so don't panic if it calls you a wise old soul or a hyper little spark. Enter your name and meet the age your mind has been secretly running on.

Where the phrase brain age came from

The idea entered popular culture through a 2005 Nintendo DS title built around exercises devised by the neuroscientist Ryuta Kawashima, which handed players a cheerful number describing how old their brain supposedly was. It was a scoring gimmick wrapped around arithmetic and reading drills, and it sold tens of millions of copies.

Researchers do use a brain-age gap, but it means something far narrower. A model trained on MRI scans predicts a person's chronological age from the structure of their brain, and the difference between prediction and reality is studied as a possible marker of health. It needs a scanner, a trained model and a large sample to train on. Nothing on a web page can approximate that, and nothing about the spelling of a name carries the information.

When these claims were tested by regulators

In January 2016 the United States Federal Trade Commission settled with Lumos Labs, the maker of Lumosity, over advertising suggesting its games could sharpen everyday performance and hold off cognitive decline. The company accepted a judgment of $50 million, suspended to $2 million, and agreed to stop making claims it could not support. That case is worth keeping in mind whenever a product offers you a number for the age or the health of your mind.

Cognitive ageing itself is real and well studied. Processing speed tends to slip while vocabulary and accumulated knowledge often hold steady or improve well into later life. It is measured with normed batteries, administered by professionals, across sessions, with error bars attached.

What the letters in your name are doing

Nothing measurable. The reveal here is a deterministic shuffle: the letters you type are converted to numbers, added up, and mapped onto one of five written results. The same spelling always produces the same outcome, and a nickname produces a different one, which tells you plainly that the input being read is the string rather than the person.

Enjoy it as a piece of playful writing about how curiosity and caution mix in a mind. It does not estimate the age of your brain, it knows nothing about how you think, and any year or percentage attached to it has been invented rather than measured.

How this one works: the name you type is turned into a number, and that number picks one of the outcomes below. It is a party trick rather than a reading — the fun is in which one you land on, not in it being true.
