Plato got to the invisibility question first
In the second book of the Republic, Glaucon tells Socrates about Gyges, a shepherd who finds a ring that turns him invisible and promptly uses it to seduce a queen, kill a king and seize a kingdom. Glaucon's challenge is blunt: nobody is decent by preference, only by fear of being caught. Hand an honest man that ring and within a week he behaves exactly like the thief. Much of the rest of the Republic is Plato's long attempt at an answer.
The thought experiment has survived two and a half thousand years because it is a good one, and because asking somebody which power they would take is the same question wearing a costume.
Fantasy questions collect surprisingly honest answers
In 1986 Hazel Markus and Paula Nurius introduced the idea of possible selves: the versions of ourselves we hope to become, expect to become and dread becoming. Their argument was that these imagined figures are not idle daydreaming. They work as incentives, and they shape how we interpret whatever happens to us day to day.
A power fantasy is a side door into that territory. Ask people directly what they want and they will hand you the respectable answer. Ask what they would do with an impossible ability and the guard drops, because nothing is at stake. Time-bending tends to appeal to those who feel permanently behind. Invisibility attracts anyone tired of being observed. Healing often draws people who have spent years quietly repairing things for others. These are hints about what feels scarce at the moment, not diagnoses.
The plain description of what happens here
Seven questions, five possible powers, and whichever one your answers point at most often is the one you are given. There is no validated instrument behind that. A questionnaire earns professional trust slowly, through large samples, checks that its items are measuring a single thing, evidence that it produces stable results over time, and comparisons against outcomes in the real world.
This borrows the shape of such a thing and skips the labour, which is fine as long as everyone involved knows it. Take the power, argue with the result, then go and do something less imaginary.
